In this denomination is introduced a carved house made of raupo or in modern times, ofimages1QZQIDL1 fluted boarding to represent reed-work. In the left background is a tree fern, and to the right the ti-palm or cabbage tree. The ornamental building is designed “Wharewhakairo”. The Maori shows ingenuity of design in the carved barged-boards called “maipi” the join at the gable being covered by a carved face, “koruru” surmounted by the little caved figure, “tekoteko”. At the sides before the lower termination “raparapa” of the barge boards are two uprights called “amo” similar in design to the “poupou” of the interior walls; and a long ornamented skirting –board runs across the panel. This board, “paepaeroa” encloses the space, equivalent to a veranda or sun-porch, called “mahua”.

Designed: by Mr. H W Young who had also been successful in the competition for the 1898 Issue.  Colour: Marigold
