This resource is a compilation of research to support my collection of the 1935 – 47 New Zealand Pictorial Stamps. I have been collecting this as a specialist issue since 1966. The collection started with material handed down to me by my late father Ben Hutchinson, who was a part time stamp dealer in New Plymouth. I had some early schooling from my father soaking, and sorting hundreds of stamps as a child, learning how to recognise papers, watermarks, perforations and flaws

This Specialist Resource was developed by me for my personal use and I unashamedly have borrowed bits from other authorities.

My Sources are:

  • Campbell Paterson – whose catalogue I find invaluable and numbering system I have adopted and is my “Bible”.
  • Campbell Paterson also produce a Newsletter which features a segment called “Fifty years ago NZ Stamps as I have come to know them by Campbell Paterson”. I have reproduced relevant parts of this commentary.
  • The Postage Stamps of New Zealand VOL II, 1950, edited by R.J. G Collins and C.W. Watts, for the Royal Philatelic Society of New Zealand Inc. Chapter I which I have broken down and reproduced on a stamp by stamp basis.
  • The 2s Pictorial of 1935 -42 Plate 1, 1951 by R.J.G. Collins. Ray Collins produced this masterpiece of research on this one stamp which I have reproduced in full in this resource.

  1. Hello Wayne,
I have just ‘cottoned on’ to your web page, which I have now bookmarked. Congratulations; it looks excellent. As someone else very interested in NZ second pictorials, we might find value in exchanging views. Please email me if you are interested. My current interest is in the perforations of pre- and post blitz perforations of the 2d. Whare, mostly from a study of plate blocks. You?
    Kind regards,
    Geoff Rickards
